About Breakout

Breakout is based on the classic arcade game released by Atari in 1976. Designed as a single-player twist on Pong, the game replaced the second player with a wall of bricks. Using only a paddle and ball, the goal was simple: keep the ball in play and destroy every brick on the screen.

Breakout also has an interesting place in computer history. Atari assigned Steve Jobs to the project, and Jobs brought in his friend Steve Wozniak to help design the hardware. Wozniak created an incredibly compact 45-chip prototype while still working at Hewlett-Packard. The design was so tightly optimized that Atari engineers found it difficult to manufacture, and the production version was eventually redesigned using around 100 chips.

Nearly 50 years later, the basic idea still works: move the paddle, keep the ball alive, and break everything above you. This version keeps that original arcade concept while adding new levels, changing patterns, multiball, increasing difficulty, high scores, and a few surprises of its own.

SWEET MODE

Looking for a slightly different challenge? SWEET Mode splits your paddle in two, gives you +1 bonus point for every brick, and adds colorful music-reactive effects.

TYPE: SWEET

Once SWEET Mode is active, press M to toggle the music on or off.

CONTROLS

Keyboard: Left / Right Arrow keys move the paddle and waiting ball. Space serves the ball upward.

Mouse: Click the game to lock the mouse in. Move left/right to control the paddle. Press ESC to release the mouse.

Tablet: Touch and drag left/right to position the paddle and waiting ball. Tap to serve.

BONUSES

Every 75 score points, an extra ball is added to the field (maximum 2 active balls).

Clear an entire level without losing a life and you earn +1 life.

Each higher level raises the minimum ball speed. If you lose a life, the next ball resets to that level's minimum speed instead of staying at the faster speed you reached.

CLASSIFIED ARCADE SECRETS

SWEET Mode isn't the only thing hiding inside Breakout. A couple of old-school secrets are waiting for players who know where to look.
